Animal Reproduction, Gynaecology & Obstetrics
The Department of Animal Reproduction, Gynaecology and Obstetrics was established on 22nd July, 1961 by Dr. A. S. Kaikini who was appointed as Professor of Gynaecology and was instrumental in building up the Department at Nagpur Veterinary College, Nagpur. He was a Fellow of Royal Veterinary College, Stockholm, Sweden. He was a trendsetter and designed the road map of this Department. After becoming the Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Science at P. K. V. Akola, Dr. R. M. Bhandari took over as In-charge of the Department. He was succeeded by Dr. P. M. Belorkar and thereafter by Dr. S. C. Vhora. All these Heads of the Department were well supported by the colleagues of their time Dr. V. B. Hukeri, Dr. D. R. Pargaonkar, Dr. M. S. Kadu, Dr. J. K. Puranik and Dr. A. W. Deshmukh who also took pains and efforts in giving shape to the Department. After the establishment of MAFSU, Dr. S. C. Vhora was continued as Head of the Department. After his retirement in 2005 Dr. D. S. Raghuwanshi became the In-charge of the Department. On 25th February 2008 Dr. S. R. Chinchkar became the Professor and Head of the Department.
Since it's establishment the Department has been marching ahead as per the vision of Dr. A. S. Kaikini, the Founder of this Department of Animal Reproduction. Dr. D. R. Pargaonkar and Dr. A. S. Kaikini carried out pioneer work on the various reproductive aspects of Nagpuri buffaloes for the first time. Dr. M. S. Kadu and Dr. A. S. Kaikini conducted the studies on the Parturition, involution of uterus and post-partum anestrus in Sahiwal cows. Dr. J. K. Puranik worked on the establishment of the norms for different reproductive parameters in goats which was a first of it’s kind. Dr. A. S. Kaikini carried out intensive studies on various aspects of reproduction. Dr. A. W. Deshmukh worked on the reproductive aspects of Sahiwal X Jersey cross bred cows with three levels of inheritance and recommended that 50% exotic Jersey inheritance is most suitable and economic under tropical condition. The andrological studies conducted by Dr. V. B. Hukei to evaluate the performance of the breeding bulls were of great utility to AI centres. In recent years the studies were conducted on synchronization of oestrus in cows and buffaloes by using different protocols.
The staff of the Department is actively involved in the extension activities for the betterment of livestock owners and professional dairy farmers by organizing several Animal Infertility Camps. Various training programmes were organised on Artificial Insemination, Handling of Frozen Semen and Reproductive Health Management for Livestock Development Officers and Livestock Supervisors. At present the Department is conducting Hand’s on trainings on “Modern Diagnostic Equipment’s in Veterinary Profession” such as ultrasonography, handy X – ray machine, biochemical and hematology analyzers for Veterinarian and Para-veterinarians under ASCAD.
As a Faculty improvement programme Dr. M. S. Kadu deputed to Germany for Post- Graduate Diploma in Physio-pathology of Animal Reproduction and A. I. in 1975 and Dr. A. W. Deshmukh was deputed to Sweden and became Fellow of Royal Veterinary College of Stockholm, Sweden in 1985. Dr. S. R.Chinchkar attended World Congress of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) in 2003 at Bangkok, Thailand and in 2012 at Birmingham, U. K. In 2008 Dr. S. K. Sahatpure attended the International Conference of Animal Reproduction at Budapest, Hungary. It is a matter of proud that Dr. V. B. Hukeri, Dr. R. M. Bhandari, Dr. M. S. Kadu, Dr. A. W. Deshmukh and Dr. D. S. Raghuwanshi completed their Ph.D. degree by research from the same Department. Similarly, Dr. J. K. Puranik, Dr. M. S. Kadu and Dr. D. R. Pargaonkar completed their M.V.Sc. by research. The M.V.Sc. degree programme by course work was started in 2002 after the establishment of MAFSU and till date 19 students have completed their M.V.Sc. degree in Animal Reproduction. The Ph.D. degree programme by Course Work has been started from the year 2010-11.
At present the Department of Animal Reproduction is carrying out all the Teaching, Research and Extension activities under the dynamic leadership of Dr. S. R. Chinchkar, Professor and Head of the Department since 25th February 2008. Dr. S. K. Sahatpure Associate Professor, Dr. A. P. Gawande Associate Professor, Dr. Kavita Khillare Assistant Professor and Dr. Manoj S. Patil Assistant Professor are the other staff members working in the Department. All these staff members are engaged in imparting quality education to Undergraduate, Post Graduate and Ph. D. students. The Department has been well equipped with Dr. A. S. Kaikini Seminar Hall (Air Conditioned), sophisticated audio visual aids like Interactive Board and LCD for Power Point Presentations for Undergraduate, Post Graduate and Doctoral teaching. The U. G. and P. G. Laboratories are well equipped with standard laboratory infrastructure coupled with modern Ultrasonography equipment having rectal and abdominal probes for early pregnancy and reproductive disorders diagnosis which is being routinely used for Undergraduate and Post Graduate teaching and Infertility camps.
The Department is engaged in Regular Refreshers’ Trainings to the Assistant Commissioners of A. H., Livestock Development Officers and Livestock Supervisors of Department of Animal Husbandry, Maharashtra State in the field of Handling of Frozen Semen, Reproductive Health Management, Artificial Insemination and Modern Diagnostic Equipments (Ultrasonography, X – Ray and Autoanalyzers) in Veterinary Profession. So far we have trained 832 officers of State Animal Husbandry Department. The feedback from the field veterinarians is a good source for us to design need based research on which the Department is extensively working and providing the solutions to the field veterinarians.
The thrust research areas on which the department is presently working are different oestrus synchronization and artificial insemination protocols and their efficacy in enhancing the conception rate in bovine.
