Brief History of the Department:
Department of Surgery and Radiology is established since the inception of college in the year 1958. Initially, this department was started functioning at Government Veterinary Polyclinic, Maharajbagh Road Nagpur. Later, it was shifted to OPD building in the year 1964 located at the side of main college building at seminary hills Nagpur. Today also this department is functioning in the same building with facility of small animals operation theatre.

Salient features:
Teaching: The faculty members of this department are engaged in teaching U.G., P.G. and Ph.D. degree students, as per VCI norms for B.V.Sc. and A.H. degree and ICAR norms for M.V.Sc and Ph.D. degree programme. The post graduate degree programme has started in this discipline from 1974 and Ph.D.degree programme by course work started in the year 2012. Till date 68 M.V.Sc and 3 Ph.D. students completed their degree.Significant Developments Made in Improving the Teaching:
1) Preparation of Visual aids viz. Lecture CDs.
2) Preparation of power point presentations
3) Preparations of Practical Manual for all courses.
4) Preparation of Video clips for different surgical interventions.
5) Models of Surgical Sutures: The New Approach of Teaching
Research Acheivements:
1) Simplest close method technique developed for the treatment of Subluxation /Upward fixation of Patella (Ringni) in cattle and Buffalo.
2) Technique for Diaphragmatic hernia repair without use of general anaesthesia and positive pressure apparatus.
3) Pioneer work in Bovine urolithiasis.
4) Pioneer work on large animal orthopedic surgery.
5) Refinement of Cataract surgery.
6) Systemic investigation of Venereal granuloma with respect etiology, immunology and treatment. Successful tissue culture and karyotyping of veneral granuloma carried out for the first time in india.
7) Canine Urolithiasis.
8) Buffalo horn peg can be used as biomaterial implant in long bone fractures of canines
9) Chemotherapy in mammary and vaginal tumors was successfully standardized and recommended.
10) Orthopaedic surgery in small animals with the use of interlocking nails.
11) Ultrasonography guided biopsy in canine for detection various diseases in abdominal organs.
12) Surgico-therapeutic management anal and perianal affections in canine.
13) Surgico-therapeutic management oral affections in canine.
14) Clinical studies on paralysis on dogs.
15) Surgico-therapeutic management of ear affections in buffalo.
Innovation / Techniques or Technology Developed / Research Recommendations:
1) For effective treatment of mammary tumour in dogs, surgical excision and chemotherapy with Doxorubicin Hydrochloride @ 30mg/M2/I/v with a gap of 21 days is recommended. (This technique or technology developed by Dr. B.M Gahlod in 2002-2003)
2) Ointment prepare from Geru 30gm+ snail shell 50gm boiled in castor oil and Alua-20gm ,Sahajan gum -50gm added to the above mixture and when applied in luke warm condition is effective for treatment of swelling of shoulder/neck/limb/joints in bullock. (This technique or technology developed by Dr. M.S.Dhakate in 2005-2006)
3) Local application of juice of fresh leaves of Luffa acutangula Roxb (Ridge Gourd) and Tridex procumbence (Ekdandi/ Kambarmodi) is effective for treatment of wound in buffaloes. (This technique or technology developed by Dr. S.N.Patil., in 2005-2006)
4) Submucosal resection followed by Vincristine sulphate @ 0.025 mg/kg body weight intravenously at weekly interval for five cycles is recommended successfully for the treatment of venereal granuloma without any adverse effects on different hematological and biochemical parameters. (This Technique or Technology Developed by Dr.S.V.Upadhye in 2008)
5)Successful repair of femur fracture in canine with the use of cost effective implants- horn peg along with Nandrolene Laurate @ 0.5 mg/kg BW I/m at weekly interval. (This technique or technology developed by Dr. B.M Gahlod in 2009)
6) Modified suturing approach employing hypodermic needle of 16 and 18 gauge is recommended for suturing of skin in buffalo and cattle respectively, as an alternative to conventional suturing using traumatic needle, since it is simple, rapid and surgeon friendly. (This Technique or Technology Developed by Dr.M.G.Thorat in 2008-2009)
7)The fluorescent dye technique using fluorescein sodium dye (10% solution) slowly by intravenous route @ 25 mg/kg body weight is recommended for diagnoses of viable and dead part of intestines under ultraviolet light in semi darken operation theatre for clinical use. (This Technique or Technology Developed by Dr.S.V.Upadhye in 2012)

1)Smearing of Luffa Acutangula Roxb (Ridge gourd/Tridex procumbens (Ekdandi) leave juice on wound healing.
2) Wound Management in Buffaloes.
3) Treatment of Swelling of Neck and Shoulder in Bullock/Bulls
4)Studies on Venereal Granuloma in Canines. Participation in Symposium/ conferences/ Workshop/Trainings / Summer school / Winter School : The faculty members of this department are regularly participating in National and International Symposium/Conferences/Workshop and in Summer /Winter school training programmes.
b) Extension activities:
1) Regularly rendering services at adapted village as a part of Ambulatory clinic. 2) Regularly participating and treating the cases surgically for various surgical affections in the Animal Health Camps organized by the State Department, Z.P., NGOs and N.S.S. activity of the college. 3) Regularly rendering services in Composite Clinical Facility and Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex of the college. 4) The faculty members of this department rendering the services at TVCC even during night hours on emergency call basis and holidays as well. 5) The faculty members played active role in generating revenue receipt of TVCC to the tune of Rs. 17, 97,563/- during 2012-2013 till January-2013. 6) Regularly participating in State and National level exhibitions and guiding the livestock owners. 7) Regularly rendering the services for captive zoo and free range animals of the forest department. Brief About Service Record :- Since 2002 to 2009 worked as Livestock Development officer, Animal Husbandry Department, GOM. In 2009 joined as an assistant Professor, at COVAS, Udgir. In 2012 cleared Ph.D. entrance exam and seek admission in Ph.D. (inservice) at Nagpur Veterinary College, Nagpur.
