Poultry Science
The Department of Poultry Science employs a multidisciplinary approach for teaching, research and extension. One of the primary goals of the Department of Poultry Science is to provide practical exposure to stimulate academic achievement for students and to prepare them to compete and excel in a changing world. The Department of Poultry Science provides outstanding practical exposure for students, farmers, unemployed youth, women, semiliterate and the general public through the discovery, verification and dissemination of relevant, science based knowledge.
ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT
The Department of Poultry Science was established in the year 2001. Since the department was lead by Dr. S. M.Mandlekar in the capacity of Associate Professor of Poultry Science till 2005. The college began offering specialized postgraduate study in the Poultry Sciences from 2002. Currently, Dr. B. R. Kolte is leading the Department as Professor & Head of the Department of Poultry Science. The department has a Poultry Research and Training Center with Broiler Experiential Unit, Layer experiential unit, Hatchery unit, Feed mill, Dressing unit, Lecture hallto cater the need of under graduate and post graduates teaching and research programme. Since inception of Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Science University in 2000, students are enrolled for master degree in the discipline of Poultry Science. The department is proud of the fact that most post graduates entered in poultry professions after successful completion of their master program.

Teaching Interest: My teaching focus is to prepare skilled scholar to work in the industry/ academic / business. I teach courses in introductory poultry nutrition, management, hatchery management and commercial aspect of poultry production. Post graduate students learn advanced knowledge of poultry science and its applicability in department of Poultry Science.
Research Interest: My research interests: applied nutrition research of commercial meat-type poultry and utilization of agricultural co-products as feed ingredients for poultry. Most of my research is done with broilers and some with Quail in the areas of nutrition, management and In ovo technology: 1) nutritional factors that affect immune function, skeletal development, enteric development, growth characteristics, and meat quality; 2) Use of supplemental enzymes to improve feed digestibility and gut health 3) Evaluation of alternatives to antibiotics in broiler feeding programs; and 5) Early chick nutrition. In future the environmental component of my research relates to the organic poultry production and waste utilization in relates to broiler and quail production system
Extension Interest: My extension program deals with issues related to nutrition and management of rural poultry, with an emphasis to local birds. Considerable efforts are focused on short term training, diploma courses, workshops and seminars periodically throughout year. Topics include backyard poultry farming, alternative species poultry farming, value added poultry products, utilization of characteristics of local birds and transfer of technology at root level.

Teaching Interest: "Tell me, and I will forget. Show me, and I may remember. Involve me, and I will understand". So the main objective of my teaching graduates and post graduates students to get basic knowledge and conceptual aspects with hands on training and practice in a real life work environment. It also aims to get confidence, among the students to meet needs of Government sector, private sector and to undertake self-employment.
Research Education Interest: My research interest is mainly related with broilers in the areas of nutrition, management which can be use as commercial aspect in production system.
Extension Education activity: In extension program I really believe that it should be mainly related with farmers. So the main efforts will be done to conduct short term training for them throughout the year. Another extension work can done by delivering a lectures on different aspects of poultry production like nutrition, management, diseases, poultry marketing and processing through Television or Radio talks.
