Livestock Production Management
The Department of Livestock Production and Management, previously known as Department of Animal Husbandry, is established since long in Nagpur Veterinary College, Nagpur with the broad objectives of teaching, research and extension of the knowledge on rearing and taking care of various species of livestock and poultry for the benefit of the farmers and rural youth. At present, the department offers, as per VCI syllabus, courses to undergraduate (B.V.Sc, & A.H. Degree Course) students. The post graduate degree programme (M.V.Sc.) in the discipline of Livestock Production and Management has been started in the department from the year 2002-2003, Up to 2011-12 twelve students have completed M.V.Sc. degree programme. This department has also been engaged in research on different specialized livestock farming systems, management techniques, stress management, health management, nutritional management and economical eco-friendly utilization and disposal of farm waste etc.

Extracurricular activities and Achievements
- Represented Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University as a team leader for inter-university Level Chess competition held at Saurashtra University, Rajkot in the year 2004.
- Participated in National Service Scheme (NSS) camp held in Gadchiroli city of Maharashtra state from 1st to 10th of December 2003.
- Participated in Various Sports, Drama and other Cultural Events during UG and Master's program at college level.
ACHIEVEMENT ACCREDITED TO THE DEPARTMENT
- Developed blow ups and slides of various breeds of cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat wild animals and birds and exhibited nicely in laboratory of the Department.
- Developed and exhibited folders on various topics of animal husbandry nicely on exhibit boards
- The models made up of plaster of paris of cattle and buffalo breeds of India showing phenotypic characteristics.
- The glass covered models of ideal dairy, pig, goat, duck, poultry farming, silo pit, zoo are presented and exhibited.
- More than 100 charts giving information on package of practices of management of farm animals are depicted in Laboratory.
All blow ups, charts, slides and models are very important for transfer of technical knowledge to the college students, visiting farmers and livestock owners.
For live demonstration practical classes are conducted at Gaolao Cow and Nagpuri Buffalo Research and Training Center, Maharaj Bag Zoo, Bull Depot, Poultry Farm, Central Hatchery and Stud Farm.
Recommendations
State government has released seven recommendations given by this department as under
- Selection of cross bred cows can be done on shape and size of the udder and teats and her milk yield on the day of measurement.
- Calves can be reared on as low as 72.9 kg whole milk in six weeks and good quality calf starter.
- In layers, energy and protein phased feeding program as compared to conventional feeding is not beneficial. However two phase protein feeding program result in high significantly higher egg production than three phase protein feeding program.
- Under deep litter system of poultry keeping 1.5 sq. ft. floor area per layer is recommended.
- 0.4 sq. ft. floor space per broiler chick up-to four weeks of age and 0.8 sq. ft. floor space per broiler from 4th to 8th week of age is recommended.
- Morianga olifera leaves and pods are considered as a source of protein and iron, leaf and pod powder can be incorporated in broiler ration up-to 10 to 15%.
- During extreme hot weather the fresh infertile eggs can be preserved for 7 days in lime water, for 8 days in earthen pots in wet sand.

Vision / Mission of the Department
Future Development Plan
- Modernization of laboratory of the Department. The blow ups, slides and models in such a field of the subject which are yet to covered will be prepared and depicted in laboratory. This will be helpful and effective in teaching practical to the students of college. This will also helpful in adding knowledge into the mind of farmers, unemployed youth frequently visiting to the department of college.
- Preparation of power point presentations on various topics of U.G. courses for effective teaching with latest technologies to the students are in progress.
- Provision of opportunities of the staff for higher learning and teaching to reputed institute and colleges.
- Conducting intensive need based research for accelerating productivity and sustainability of livestock under climatic condition of Vidarbha region. Also conducting need based research as per the requirements of livestock owners in this area.

Farmers are frequently visiting to the department for clearing their queries about rearing of livestock and establishment of different livestock enterprises. The staff of the department provides information to the farmers about starting any livestock enterprise/ farm.Large number of livestock farmers visits this Department and the farm.Advises on livestock rearing, sources of availability of animals and breeding stock of animals are provided to the farmers.
